Compensation 

$10.68/hr.

TEMPORARY additional pay of $4/hr. for each hour worked.

Position Summary and Responsibilities

Position Summary: This position exists to perform semiskilled work in support of the grounds keeping maintenance of agency property. The goal of this position is to provide a safe and therapeutic environment for the quality care of all agency customers. This position is responsible for maintaining lawns and turf, which play a key role in reducing insect and mosquito populations. Treat and control outdoor environments to aid in the reduction of the rodent and pest populations such as snakes, gophers, skunks, opossums, and mosquitoes. Maintain roadways, clear ice and snow from streets, maintain storm drainage systems, patch holes in pavement, install and repair traffic signs, mix and apply herbicides or insecticides, remove dead trees and stumps, prune trees and shrubs, assist with agency moving details, supervise inmate laborers, and sanitation of trash receptacles.

Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:  

Lawn and Turf Maintenance

  • Mow agency lawns using different types of mowers
  • Trim and edge hospital property using various lawn care equipment
  • Prepare, plant, fertilize and water lawns
  • Mix and apply chemicals according to label directions
  • Police grounds for trash collection
  • Rake and remove leaves from campus grounds
  • Control damaging rodents
  • Supervise inmate workers in all related work

Assist Other Engineering Departments/Miscellaneous Duties

  • Assist other engineering departments in maintenance/operations as needed
  • Check and clean tunnels
  • Sanitation of trash receptacles
  • Greenhouse maintenance or projects
  • Assist with agency moving details
  • Supervise inmate workers in all related work

Landscape Management

  • Plant and cultivate flower beds
  • Help construct and maintain landscaped areas
  • Plant and water trees, shrubs and ground covers
  • Prune trees, shrubs and ornamentals
  • Remove dead trees and stumps
  • Supervise inmate workers in all related work

Street and Parking Lot Maintenance

  • Clear snow and ice from streets, parking lots and sidewalks
  • Spread sand/salt on streets and walkways for ice control
  • Clean streets, curb, guttering, and storm drains of gravel and debris
  • Install and repair hospital signage
  • Patch holes and cracks in roadways
  • Supervise inmate workers in all related work

Equipment and Tool Maintenance

  • Perform preventative maintenance on equipment utilized, make minor repairs or adjustments
  • Service equipment according to specified requirements and keep supervisor informed of equipment condition and status
  • Clean sharpen and repair all hand tools
  • Supervise inmate workers in all related work

Training

  • Toolbox meetings provided or scheduled by supervisor
  • LSH mandated training
  • KDADS mandated training
  • Training required by Department Of Corrections if inmates are assigned

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:  

  • Valid Driver’s License with no restrictions

Preferred Qualifications:  

  • Prefers 1 year experience in a grounds-maintenance related field – landscape, nursery, greenhouse, or lawn care profession or business

Post-Offer, Pre-employment Requirements:  

  • Ability to pass a KBI background and pre-employment drug test.
