Compensation

$36.30/hour

NEW PAY INCENTIVE! We currently have an additional $8.50/hour pay incentive approved for this position for the remainder of the fiscal year!

Position Summary & Responsibilities

Position Summary:  The RN Specialist/Unit Leader is responsible for administrative leadership, staff coverage, patient care delivery, and compliance of all Larned State Hospital Policy and Procedure.  The RN Specialist/Unit Leader in this position must guide and encourage employee participation in quality initiatives through application of overall knowledge of the agency and its programs; encourage involvement and commitment to performance improvement activities; support the hospital in the pursuit of its mission. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of principles of growth and development and possess the ability to assess and interpret data to identify age specific needs.

Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:  

  • Provides Administrative Leadership
  • Collaborates with Program Director to develop budget for unit then maintains, monitors and lives within the budget and allocated FTE’s
  • Collaborates with Program Director and Director of Nursing in the administration of services within LSH
  • Serves as resource person to nursing personnel
  • Responsible for knowledge of and compliance with all applicable standards and laws
  • Maintains accountability for compliance with accrediting and regulatory agency guidelines related to documentation in the medical record and LSH documentation
  • Participates in hiring process and maintains adequate number of qualified and competent staff consistent with program needs
  • Plans and achieves effective orientation of new employees
  • Provides new employees with calendar of orientation schedule
  • Acquires and maintains current knowledge in nursing practice
  • Encourages ongoing professional development of others
  • Collaborates with other nursing leaders to update professional policies and procedures
  • Collaborates with all members of the treatment team/programs and administration to assure maintenance of professional standards within all aspects of hospital functioning
  • Attends treatment team meetings
  • Communicates significant issues to Nursing staff, Nurse Leaders, Program Director and Director of Nursing through monthly staff meetings, maintaining meeting minutes, the telephone, face to face and in writing
  • Prepares schedules for nursing staff coverage and maintains optimal coverage to meet patient care needs based on patient acuity levels
  • Monitors overtime use to avoid unnecessary resource allocation
  • Ensures schedule is posted in timely manner at least one (1) week prior to beginning of new schedule.
  • Monitors and oversees completion of Unit/Department Orientation (LSH-477) for new and/or transferred employees
  • Provides Clinical Leadership
  • Directs and maintains clinical processes so to achieve optimal effectiveness in meeting treatment goals
  • Participates/encourages/supports staff leading groups and other advanced therapies
  • Ensures all nursing staff focus on treatment plan implementation
  • Assesses nursing staff for educational needs
  • Works with staff training to plan and implement training
  • Provides and monitors clinical experiences of Level I and Level II students on unit
  • Assigns and monitors staff’s attendance at in-service training
  • Actively participates with multidisciplinary treatment team in the planning and execution of the treatment plan
  • Teaches health care practices to nursing staff and patients
  • Monitors patient care
  • Conducts clinical rounds and discusses observations with appropriate staff
  • Intervenes to prevent injury to patients or others per de-escalation techniques, using CPI approved procedures.
  • Obtain/maintain current cardiopulmonary resuscitation for healthcare providers.
  • Monitors critical clinical issues and takes action to ensure follow-up and follow-through
  • Provides Supervision
  • Evaluates supervisees’ work performance based on established professional performance expectations
  • Initiates and conducts disciplinary actions based on performance expectations
  • Prompt notification of Director of Nursing, Human Resources and Program Director regarding performance issues related to professional standards
  • Assures professional ethics are maintained on unit including patient/staff boundaries and staff free of substance (drug/alcohol) influences
  • Provides timely and appropriate follow up with employees
  • Provides consistent enforcement of standards
  • Establishes and evaluates core competencies
  • Completes evaluations timely for subordinate staff and oversees completion of evaluations by shift leaders.

 


Qualifications

  • Education:  

Licensing and Certification:  

  • At the time of the appointment the selected employee must possess a Kansas license/temporary permit or be given authority to practice as a Registered Nurse by the Kansas State Board of Nursing.

Minimum Qualifications:  

  • One-year experience in registered nursing.
  • Requires an approved drug test approved by the Kansas Department of Administration unless the incumbent is moving from one safety-sensitive position to another safety-sensitive position within the same agency performing substantially similar duties.
  • Ability to pass a KBI background check
  • Positions in this class require that at the time of appointment, the selected candidate must take and pass a drug screening test approved by the Division of Personnel Services.
  • CPI Certification within 60 days of employment and maintain certification throughout employment
  • CPR Certification within one month of employment and maintain certification throughout employment.

Preferred Qualifications:  

  • Prefer B.S.N. with two (2) years of experience as an RN Senior at Larned State Hospital.
  • Prefer experience in Psychiatric Nursing.
  • Prefer experience in supervising and clinical areas.

Post-Offer, Pre-employment Requirements

  • Ability to pass a KBI background and pre-employment drug test.
